The Revival; Back to our roots with Ethic Entertainment and Boondocks Gang

Gengetone is a sub genre of Kenyan Hiphop music that is very much embraced by teenagers, young adults and once in a while the elderly. From Ochungulo family, Ethic Entertainment, Boondocks Gang, Sailors Gang, Rico gang, Mbogi Genje to our very own Mbuzi Gang made my highschool and college years. Early 2019, the groups started with bangers from Rieng, Wamlambez, Pekejeng, Kimonyoski where they made headlines and secured their bags.
Ethic Entertainment made the chats in 2018 after the Lamba lolo release. They released mad tracks pouring sensational vibes that would get everyone jamming to them. They still are the reigning fathers of gengetone with songs like Tarimbo, Daktari Dondoka and Pandana. Many of Ethic's Songs are very popular and trendy on social media in line with a great number of streaming and downloads on Audiomack, YouTube and other audio apps. Since their breakthrough in music, they have had features with various other Kenyan artists including Otile Brown, The Kansoul and Boondocks Gang. Despite facing the wrath of the Kenya Film Classification Board for claims of promoting violence among women through their lyrics, Ethic weren't thrown off balance. They made hits; they were loved, they were praised.
The Kidole hit makers Boondocks gang have a couple of hits from the recent years for example Dhidhi, Hainishtui and 2020. Their song _Mboko Haram_ was a huge success and has more than a million views on YouTube. We have seen more of Exray and Odi wa Muranga doing collabos with various artists like Mejja, Mbuzi Gang and Bahati.
Due to some personal challenges and criticism the groups went off the grid with the artists committing to solo project and doing collabos with other artists in the industry. Every once in a while, though, the members would come together and make a hit or two then get back to their solo careers. The gengetone flag bearers are not dead. Not just yet.
In 2019, two of the biggest gengetone groups (Ethic Entertainment and Boondocks Gang) came together to give us the club banger Thao. It had a positive reception. People often view these two groups as rivals but they went ahead and surprised everyone by doing this collabo to leave us still collecting our jaws from the ground at how good this jam is. This year, the duo are set to release a jam tagged Naskia Waah produced by Black Market Records. Check out Ethic Entertainment and Boondocks Gang on YouTube and follow their social media accounts to be updated on their upcoming projects.
